Abstract

Schelling’s manuscript on Plato's Timaeus, drafted during the first half of 1794, belongs to the folder No. 34 of Schelling’s Nachlass, which is preserved in Berlin under the title of Ueber den Geist der Platonischen Philosophie. It testifies the studies carried out by the young philosopher at the Tübingen Stift and provides precious information concerning his early interest in Platonic philosophy and the study of his ancient and modern interpreters. The manuscript gives moreover some suggestions about the debates on the Platonic philosophy in Germany at the end of the eighteenth century and testifies Schelling’s involvement on philosophical surveys about the account of the origins of world, the notion of matter and that of the soul as “principle of movement” that lay the foundations for his Naturphilosophie during the years 1797-1799.
